Still Life of flowers in a naturalistic scene, painted by the British born Australian artist George Albert Reynolds (1854-1939).
Oil on canvas laid on board, signed & dated lower right G A Reynolds 1892.
The painting sits within a period style gilt gesso & wood frame with bead course and reeded detailing.
Measures including frame: 39.5cm high, 55cm wide.
Good stable condition with some minor aged craquelure, ready to hang.
Born in England, GA Reynolds studied at the Birmingham School of Art before gaining his Art Masters Certificate in London. He emigrated to South Australia in 1886 where he accepted the first assistant teaching position at the Adelaide School of Design, working under HP Gill. Reynolds was then appointed the position of Art Master for the South Australian Education Department where he devised the state’s art curriculum, directed art instruction at the teachers training college, and designed drawing books for the state schools art program.
He was then transferred to the Victorian State Education department before he returned to South Australia, this time to the rural town of Mount Gambier where he served the local area education system for the next 26 years before retiring at the age of 76.
