Peonies in a Blue Vase by French (Lyon) artist Eugène Benoit Baudin (1843-1907).
This beautiful painting came to us via a French estate sale that was offering several preparatory studio works by this artist.
The first French inscription verso in black ink reads ‘Offered to D.Grassin by Eugène Baudin’.
The second inscription in pen reads ‘I confirm that this painting is by my Father Eugène Baudin, his son Henri Baudin 8 March 1952’.
Eugène Baudin was educated at the Lyon School of Fine Arts, and became a respected painter of Still Life, Portraits and Landscapes.
Two of his Still Life oil paintings are held in the collections at the Musee d’Orsay, one of which, ‘Camélias dans un Vase’ bears a significant resemblance to Peonies.. the same vase, although with unfinished decoration in Peonies, the light, the table.. and the brushstrokes, all with striking similarities.
The Lyon Museum of Fine Art also holds his works in their collections, and in 1983 held a dedicated exhibition of his paintings.
A street in the 9th Arrondissement of Lyon is named after him in commemoration.
Oil on board, inscription verso. The painting sits in a later vintage French carved wood frame.
