Still Life, Poppies with Ginger Jar circa 1930’s; by Australian female artist Nellie Govett (Helena Nellie Govett 1882-1965).
This is the second Still Life by Nellie Govett that we have had, the first, Daffodils in a Ginger Jar, strikingly similar in style and possibly the very same ginger jar, perhaps a favourite vessel in her studio.
Oil on board in its original pressed Oak ebonised frame, signed verso.
Measures including frame: 49cm high, 39cm wide.

Nellie Govett was born in 1882, Melbourne Victoria; she was Mother to renowned Australian artist James William Govett (1910-2008); and studied under the tutelage of Max Meldrum (1931-1950) twice becoming an Archibald finalist, (1929 and 1938). In the 1950’s Nellie and her son James held several joint exhibitions of their work and in 1993 a retrospective of their work was held at Soroptimist House, South Yarra, Victoria.
