Seagull Seascape, Leila McNamara (1894-1973)

Vintage Mid 20th Century Australian Seascape by female South Australian artist Leila Constance McNamara (1894-1973).

Born in South Australia in 1894, where she spent most of her life living in the Medindie area, Leila studied under the seascape artist James Ashton and portrait artist Leslie Wilkie. In Sydney her tutelage was with Dattilo Rubbo and James R Jackson.

Member of the Royal South Australian Society of Artists from 1915, becoming Vice-President in 1954-1961. Her exhibited paintings with the R.S.A.S.A won the landscape and still life prizes in 1926 and 1945.

– Art Gallery of South Australia 1994 “South Australian Women Artists: paintings from the 1890’s – 1940’s.

– Art Gallery of South Australia 1981 “Visions after Light: Art in South Australia 1836-1981

– Artists of the British Empire 1920, London UK, won a Wembley Gold Medal.

-Royal South Australian Society of Arts 1915-1969, various, including 10 one-person exhibitions.

 

Oil on canvas laid on board, signed lower right Leila McNamara.

Good original condition.
