A dramatic Seascape by British Marine artist William Matthew Hale (1837-1929).

William Hale was born in Bristol and educated at the Rugby School and Balliol College Oxford where he studied to become a lawyer. Upon completing his studies, he decided to leave law to follow his passion to become an artist. He was tutored in painting by the landscape artist and teacher James Duffield Harding (1798-1863) and Marine watercolour artist William Collingwood Smith (1815-1887) before becoming a full time artist in 1863.

He regularly exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Academy.

William Hale’s works are held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Victoria Art Gallery UK, RWA-Royal West England Academy.

Original side studding to the stretcher.

The painting is in original condition with a general overall aged patina.
