Australian Colonial Seascape by listed artist Louis Frank (1830-1923). Possibly Cathedral Rocks, Kiama.

Painter of NSW and Victorian landscapes in both watercolours and oils, he exhibited numerous paintings with the Royal Art Society of NSW 1880-1885.
In 1887 he took over the licence of the Coogee Ballamac Hotel, later known as the Baden Baden Hotel: a grand Victorian mansion built in c1860 overlooking Coogee Bay on its northern headland. He kept his art studio at the hotel and continued to paint whilst running the Baden Baden as its publican.
 On Monday 17th April 1893, The Daily Telegraph announced that due to his intended departure from the colony, Louis Frank would be auctioning “the whole of his superb and very valuable collections of oil paintings, water colours, rare books, reptiles, Australian butterflies and numerous other items of great artistic interest’.
Various works have been sold with major auction houses such as Christies, Sotheby’s and Bonhams, with the highest sale price of $14,400. achieved for ‘Coogee’ selling at Sotheby’s in 2002.
Oil on canvas, signed lower left Louis Frank. Original wood & composite frame with some losses and aged patina.
Measures inlcuding frame: 47.5cm high, 63cm wide, 3cm deep.
