Presented at the Paris Salon of 1739, Chardin painted at least three versions of this subject, as well as other portraits of everyday house help and labourers. In this well known Portrait, the kitchen maid pauses, distracted in thought as she goes about her labour.

Oil on wood panel, signed lower right Chardin. The painting has a rustic charm and craquelure.

Measures: 41.5cm high, 33cm wide.
