An alluring early 20th Century pencil sketch Portrait of a Lady, in a 19thc Gilt wood frame.

Although unsigned, the portrait was obtained from an estate sale in Adelaide of a friend of the Australian artist Leslie Wilkie (1879-1935) who had gifted it directly to the vendor.

Leslie Wilkie was curator and director of the Art Gallery of South Australia (1920’s) and a wonderful Australian artist who is well known for his portrait & still life paintings which adhere to the traditional school of painting; a feature of his work being his free broad brushstrokes upon a dark ground.

Hi works are held in state & regional galleries such as Art Gallery NSW, AGSA Art Gallery South Australia, National Library Canberra, State Library of Victoria, Australian War Memorial Canberra.
