Portrait by Jules Henry Roy Rousel (1897-1985)

A circa 1920/30’s (double sided) portrait by listed Australian artist Jules Henry Roy Rousel (1897-1985).

The captivating female figure stands in a confident yet playful pose, her patterned dress hitched up with her hand on hip. She is facing the light, perhaps the late afternoon sun, with her shadow falling behind her. On the reverse, a harbour scene sketch in oils.

Rousel was born in Randwick, Sydney where he won two scholarships to study drawing at the Royal Society Art School (1912-1918).

By 1935 he had travelled to Europe where he studied at the Slade School of Art London, and the Royal Academy School. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Portrait Society, Paris Salon and the Societe des Art Paris. Rousel was a Vice President and life member of the Royal Art Society NSW.

Oil on canvas, signed & dated lower left. Original studding to the stretcher with oil harbour scene painting verso. The later wooden frame can easily be removed to have the option of hanging the canvas only.
