French 19th Century Orientalist Portrait of a Boy.

In the 17th and 18th Century a fascination for the Ottoman empire aesthetic swept through European fashionistas and the socially elite .
Known as ‘Turquerie’ its influence on European art, fashion and decorative arts would then lead to the broader trend of Orientalism in the 19th Century. Portraits were sometimes painted with a flourish of exotic props and costumes, such as Turbans, robes, jewels and feathers.
Oil on canvas with original side studding to the stretcher, monogram lower right S.L or Z. Dated lower right 1881.
The painting may be hung as the canvas only, or within the frame which is easily removable.
Frame measures: 58cm high, 50cm wide.
Canvas measures: 46cm high, 38cm wide.
