French Nature Study by Eugène Benoit Baudin (1853-1907)

A c1900 French study of a majestic tree in all its verdant beauty, providing shade on a sunny day. In the background, the hazy horizon and hills.

Eugène Baudin was educated at the Lyon School of Fine Arts, and became a respected painter of Still Life, Portraits and Landscapes.
His oil paintings are held in the collections at the Musee d’Orsay.
The Lyon Museum of Fine Art also holds his works in their collections, and in 1983 held a dedicated exhibition of his paintings.
A street in the 9th Arrondissement of Lyon is named after him in commemoration.

Oil on board, unsigned, French handwritten inscription verso reads:

‘This landscape by painter Eugene Baudin was given to Desire Gassin by me, the son of the painter Henri Baudin’.

The painting has some stable cracks and mild aged patina, and sits in its later vintage french tapered wood frame.

Measures including frame: 49cm high, 39cm wide, 4.5cm deep.
