Bois de Vincennes is the largest public park in Paris, located on the eastern edge of the city. Lac de Gravelle is one of four lakes within the park and sits at its highest elevation. It is wonderful that the artist has written the locations of precisely where this landscape was painted, it explains the steep path which must lead to the lake and the wonderful views over the Parisian rooftops. A fine weather day, there is some autumn colour evident in amongst the greenery of the trees, perhaps painted towards the end of summer. Two young ladies can be seen enjoying their walk through the park.

It is entirely possible that the buyer of this painting may wish to one day in Paris, search out the spot in Bois de Vincennes, where this painted view was ‘taken’.

Adolphe Lalyre (1848-1933) was a French academic painter who graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-arts Paris in 1875 and exhibited throughout his career between 1876-1929. Lalyre is most well known for his mystical and romantic portraits of female nudes, maidens and nymphs. He also designed the stain glass windows of the Choir of the Church of Saint Germain, which was sadly destroyed by fire in 1941.

An art critic and member of des Artists Fraçais from 1880, he received medals in recognition of his work at the Paris Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900.

Lalyre died in Courbevoie in 1933 where he lived and worked in his studio, and is buried at the Cemetery of Montmartre.

His works are held at several public galleries including:

Museum of Art and History of Saint-Brieuc.

Museum of Fine Arts Chartres.

Museum of Fine Arts Blois.

Cherbourg Octeville, Thomas Henry Museum.
