19th Century New Zealand Landscape – James Robert Hutchings (1872-1962)


A large and striking, romantic view of a New Zealand lake scene (most likely Milford Sounds) by the listed artist James Robert Hutching (1872-1962).

Born in England, Hutchings arrived in Hobart the year 1883. He became a theatre set artist painting the scenery for Sydney’s Tivoli theatre.

He went on to become a prolific and succesful artist in the late 19th century and early 20th century, painting Australian and New Zealand landscapes.

Oil on academy board in its original oak wood frame (ebonised), signed lower left J Hutchings.

Measures including frame: 74cm high, 105cm wide.
