The Haul, c1940 by American, New York based, renowned Costa Rican born artist, Pachita Crespi (1900-1971); and grand-daughter of the first President of Costa Rica.
Crespi’s ‘fresh and vivid uninhibited colouring’, were noted by art reviewers as having echoes and influence of Gauguin.
In 1945 a New York Times critic wrote ‘Crespi reveals herself as an exuberant colorist whose flat almost primitive approach is enlivened by a half humorous , half fantastic imagination’.
Painter, illustrator, writer, lecturer; Pachita Crepsi was educated in the United States at the Kent Place school in New Jersey, and later studied at the Art Students League. She lived in New York and returned regularly to her beloved Costa Rica, her works reflecting the fresh and vivid uninhibited colouring of her native land.
Crespi held solo exhibitions at the Milch Galleries New York, Morton Galleries New York, Beaux Art Gallery London, Pinacotheca Gallery New York, National Museum Washington D.C, Argent Galleries New York, University of Panama and Baltimore Museum of Art.
