‘Low Tide, Soft Weather’ as titled verso on the old label of this 1892 Cornish Seascape by listed British female artist Bessie Boyns (1855-1947).
A vivacious and independent spirit, Bessie was an artist of coastal views, sculpter and organist. As an adult she lived with her younger sister Gertrude who was said to be a talented Photographer. Bessie became romantically involved with the artist Henry Edwin Tozer (1838-1913) who was already married when they met. However his wife Louisa left to live with her daughter in London, and as of the 1901 census she was described as being of widow status. It is reported that Henry however had moved in to live with Bessie and her sister Gertrude in Galmpton, Devon.
Bessie and Henry painted together and held a joint exhibition in Knightsbridge 1912, the following year 1913, he died. Gertrude died in 1928, and in 1947 Bessie died and was buried beside them both.
