Beautiful and atmospheric, c1940’s classical ballet duet on stage.
Painted in oils by listed Australian artist Ambrose Sylvester Griffin (1912-1980). Known for his Australian landscape painting (one of which resides in the Art Gallery NSW) this is an unusual subject in the artist’s career, and came to us as a set of three ballet scenes.
Ambrose Griffin studied at the National Gallery School Melbourne under Septimus Power, and was a member of the Royal Art Society NSW.
Oil on canvas, signed lower left Ambrose Griffin. Original side studding to the stretcher. The painting sits in its original gilt wood frame; there were heavy losses to the applied decorative gesso work, so the frame has been smoothed back to its wood with distressed patina.
Frame Measures: 50cm high, 58cm wide.
Canvas Measures: 43cm high, 51cm wide.
